Excerpt from Love, Money & Amanda Shaw by Linda Barrett
Vehicle idling, and with both feet on the ground, Amanda sank back into
her seat, tucked her chin to her chest, and covered her face with both arms. Just for a
minute. She needed to warm her face for just a minute. And then she'd continue to the
road and home. Only three miles back to Diamond Ridge…
She should pull her hat off and cover her face with it. That's what she should do.
Yes. She still had a hood for her head. A hood for her head. Sounded like a poem. Get
moving, Amanda. Time to get moving or she'd turn into a snowman. Or was she a
snowwoman? Did it really matter? She closed her eyes, her thoughts drifting. The
snowmobile lurched forward, hit a mogul, and tipped over. Amanda lay in the snow.
Use the phone, Amanda. Use the
phone. She pushed herself to her knees, slowly
straightened up, and reached into her pocket. Concentrate! She carefully pulled
out the cellular, then stared in dismay at the shattered remains of her lifeline.
What now? First Molly. Then her. Poor Zach. And a hundred guests to worry
about. She'd screwed up. Always screwed up with him and Molly and everyone here.
She pictured him pacing his office, pacing the lodge, checking the family kitchen,
wondering where she was. If he could see her now, he'd realize that she belonged
in the city. Instead of helping, she wound up causing him more trouble.
Her eyes filled. I'm sorry, Zach. So
sorry. She'd apologize…profusely…when she saw him again.
When you love someone, you shouldn't cause them pain. Startled,
she almost fell again. Love? Amanda Shaw in love? What a concept! She tried to
laugh, but the truth slammed her in the solar plexus.
She loved him…and that frightened her just as much as the storm did. Maybe
more.
